Google blog announcement “Finding more mobile-friendly search results”

Ensure you are aware of latest developments. Use this opportunity to stay ahead of your competitors

So… what did they say?

They restated that their intention is of course that users should get the most relevant and timely search results. They mentioned that in recent years as more people used mobile devices to access the internet their algorithms have been adapted to ensure a site is configured properly and viewable on modern devices and they have already made it easier for users to find mobile-friendly web pages.

However they have now stated that “starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.”

So… what does it mean for me?

If you are an Activ customer you benefit from a website that is configured properly and is viewable on modern devices, although it is possible that a very old site may have content that is not mobile friendly (e.g. flash technology for moving images) – and this now is flagged up in search results. If you are not a current customer we would be happy to review your site for you – an initial homepage review is free of charge.

Going forward in light of this announcement whilst your Activ site is configured for modern devices viewing on a mobile device will involve left and right scrolling and magnification – and it is this that Google now wants to eliminate for its users. Their statement means that for searches from mobile devices results would favour websites that re-arrange their content to eliminate this and/or offer a mobile specific version to the visitor.

MOBILE WEBSITETherefore this latest change makes the importance of having mobile friendly options for your website even more important.
